• Rocky Mountain News Closes

Today is the final edition of the Rocky Mountain News:

Just 55 days short of it’s 150th birthday, the Rocky Mountain News, the newspaper which chronicled the life and times of Denver and Colorado halted it’s printing presses for the last time.

Rich Boehne, chief executive officer of Rocky-owner Scripps, broke the news to the staff at a noon meeting, ending nearly three months of speculation over the paper’s future. The story continues here.

      From that report:

“In the past decade, the Rocky has won four Pulitzer Prizes, more than all but a handful of American papers. Its sports section was named one of the 10 best in the nation this week. Its business section was cited by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers as one of the best in the country last year. And its photo staff is regularly listed among the best in the nation when the top 10 photo newspapers are judged.

Staffers were told to come in today, Friday. to collect personal effects.”

Yes, today is the the final edition of the Rocky Mountain News. As Sue, was brought up in Brighton, Colorado, we thought it would be a good idea to get a copy of the last edition of the Rocky Mountain News. I phoned the newspaper subscriptions office earlier today. The rather sad sounding lady there told me that all the papers had gone – and they went expecting any back to sell as “back issues”. She didn’t sound happy at all.

We tried e-Bay. The last edition of the Rocky Mountain News was selling like hot cakes! We have managed to secure a copy of the paper with the help of a lady over in Denver, Colorado via e-bay. And she is even shipping the final edition of the Rocky Mountain News over to us. The Rocky’s final edition, will include, apparently, a special wraparound section.

So, farewell to the Rocky Mountain News as it’s final edition left the presses, hit the streets and the mailboxes of the residents of Denver, Colorado, and the rest of the world. It will be missed.
