• 250mg Is Just Not Enough!!!

It isn’t. 250mg tablets of penicillin are just not enough.

When a doctor shines a light into your throat and says “Oh. That looks bad”, you know it’s bad because the only reason you are there is because you’re feeling like complete sh*t in the first place.

Now, in terms of medical treatment, what does “bad” mean, eh? After seven or eight years of medical training and a lengthy career as a General Practitioner, you’d think a doctor would have learnt NOT to make bold, sweeping generalisations like: “Oh. That looks bad”, right, huh? I mean, it doesn’t sit well in your own psyche when the doctor confirms your worst nightmare, i.e. it really is bad in there, right, (again)?

Anyway, after having the worst, confirmed to me, I then expected the weight of the National Health Service to fall around me with it’s comforting arms and soothe my aching brow etc by giving me an appropriate WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAM cure to counteract the “Oh. That looks bad” scenario. I expected too much.

A 7 day course of penicillin. “Oh”, I thought, “It’ll be the heavy duty guns weighing in here. The 500mg tablets.”

No. I got the girly 250mg tablets. Since when does “Oh. That looks bad” warrant 250mg tablets?!? Do I have to die for my country like a rotting corpse in the streets scratching in the gutter at the remains of a foil sheet of 250mg penicillin tablets, whilst charities are giving out life saving mosquito nets in far flung countries around the globe?!

Okay. The comparison is not a good one. But the point I’m getting to is this. My doctor knows that “Oh. That looks bad” really does warrant more than 250mg tablets of penicillin. I know it NEEDS 500mg tablets of penicillin – because he’s given them to me before when I’ve been WORSE than this!?!

I guess with steam inhalations, “over the counter” decongestants, pain killers, AND the girly 250mg tablets of penicillin – and if I do nothing but drink hot liquids and stay warm – then all the “Oh. That looks bad” might eventually go away. Marvellous. I was hoping for a bit more of a 21 Century cure.

What next? A course of leeches? Small leeches of course…….
