“Say Goodnight, Dick”, to which Dick Martin would reply “Goodnight Dick” was the catchphrase which ended most of the shows of the Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. Sadly, Dick Rowan died over the weekend of respiratory complications in a hospital in Santa Monica. He was 86.
I can barely remember the show when it was aired in the UK, but I do recall the novelty of it all - with guests popping out of windows in a wall and saying daft things
(This technique then copied by many shows after that). Also there were the characters - “Very interesting… but stupid” - from the German soldier behind the bush, played by Arte Johnson.
Dick Rowan went onto become one of US televisions busiest TV directors, working on episodes of “Archie Bunker’s Place”, “Newhart” and “Family Ties” to name a few. But he’ll be more funnily remembered as the zany guy who was part of the Dan Rowan/Dick Martin “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”.
So, “Goodnight Dick” - it was fun.
